The Witches' Apothecary
for all things Herbal and Magickal
Before the Industrial Age, organic botanicals, herbal teas, herbs, and spices were commodities more valuable than gold. Over the centuries, wars were even fought over them. The fact is that many of the herbs, spices, roots, leaves, and other substances that are commonly used as seasonings in cooking also have quite positive health impacts. These items and other natural treasures can be found at our herb shop inSalem, MA.
Many herbs, spices, and other organic botanicals found at any good herb shop are rich in polyphenols. Polyphenols have antioxidant capacities that neutralize harmful free radicals and have also been shown to have cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory benefits. Some studies show that many spices and herbs may also have anti-microbial properties that can help protect against certain fungi and bacteria's growth.
Here are just two of the many magical benefits of teas, herbs, spices, and botanicals. Chatting with our knowledgeable herb shop staff will uncover hundreds more:
The Mint Family
Mints include herbs used to flavor sweet as well as savory dishes; sweet ones include peppermint and spearmint, commonly found in iced teas, candy, chewing gum, and other desserts. Savory mints include oregano and basil, which are the backbone of Italian and Greek cooking. Any reputable herb shop will carry all of these. Members of the mint family are also among the oldest medicinal herbs and were used to treat illnesses as long as 10,000 years ago.
Licorice is actually a legume related to beans and peas! Dried licorice root is a popular flavoring in candy, tea, gum, and root beer and is a main ingredient in the Greek liqueur ouzo. Licorice has been traditionally used for its expectorant properties. The boiled root is found in some Chinese dishes and is chewed in Mediterranean countries as a breath freshener.
Message From Owner
Most of us have not experienced times such as what we have in these last few months. Forced to isolation in our homes, whether with family or alone. For many, it has been depressing and filled with boredom and despair. A time of Chaos — but out of chaos comes growth and hopefully new beginnings. What am I ranting about, you might ask? Artemisia Botanicals has always been about body, mind, and spirit. One cannot be truly healthy without an equal balance of all 3 components. While most of us have escaped having Covid-19 destroy the body, for many of us — our spirits have been badly damaged.
Over the last few months, a few of us have found joy in creating with crafts. As simple as it sounds, we have found something that we enjoy while we wait for our lives to return to something we can recognize. So basically, we want to share something that has given us enjoyment, pride and helped to pass the time.
We are proud to bring magical stamping to our friends. Take a look at our new Crafts Department! We will also have classes and demos on how to work with stamps, papers, stencils, and several other techniques we’ve been enjoying.
As the city opens up more we can, maybe, even meet in person to have “play dates”. The goal is to bring fun and laughter back into our lives.
Magic empowers us and I’ve been using this as another tool. In reverence and mirth.
Anyway, check out our new mental health tools in our new Crafts Department. Coming a little at a time.
Thanks for stopping by.
Stay well, Stay sane,

Botanical Name: Curcuma longaCommon Names: Curcumin, Jiang HuangOne of the most easily recognizable spices used in middle eastern cuisine, turmeric (Curcuma longa) has a slightly bitter, warm taste. A close relation to ginger, the turmeric shrub is primarily cultivated in southeast Asia and parts of Africa. It is often used as part of food seasonings for spicy curries and pungent mustards. Turmeric is more than a popular organic seasoning, however, it's distinctive orange-yellow color has made it useful in fabric dyes.

One of our happy customers wrote to us saying, "I always LOVE the smell of Patchouli. It reminds me of my hippie days when I was younger. And of course the soap is always the best of all world wide. Thank you!"
Another satisfied customer wrote "I have been wearing your patchouli oil since you opened your store 24 years ago! What amazes me, besides the incredible scent, is how many times I am stopped and told how good I smell and asked what the scent is. It happens on the average of once a week and by men and women alike!"
Recently we introduced crafting products from Lavinia's Stamps in Wales, U.K., and they can be seen on line in our new Crafts Department.
